How To: An Evening with Randall Munroe

Blackwell's is thrilled to be hosting former NASA roboticist, creator of global online phenomenon xkcd, geek legend Randall Munroe. Randall will be in conversation about his latest book: the world’s most entertaining and impractical self-help guide, HOW TO... About the Book For any task you might want to do, there’s a right way, a wrong way, and a way so monumentally complex, excessive, and inadvisable that no one would ever try it. How To is a guide to the third kind of approach. It’s full of highly impractical advice for everything from landing a plane to digging a hole. Bestselling author and cartoonist Randall Munroe explains how to predict the weather by analysing the pixels of your Facebook photos. He teaches you how to tell if you’re a baby boomer or a ‘90s kid by measuring the radioactivity of your teeth. He offers tips for taking a selfie with a telescope, crossing a river by boiling it, and powering your house by destroying the fabric of space-time. And if you want to get rid of the book once you’re done with it, he walks you through your options for proper disposal, including dissolving it in the ocean, converting it to a vapor, using tectonic plates to subduct it into the earth’s mantle, or launching it into the sun. By exploring the most complicated ways to do simple tasks, Munroe doesn’t just make things difficult for himself and his readers. As he did so brilliantly in What if?, Munroe invites us to explore the most absurd reaches of the possible. Full of clever infographics and amusing illustrations, How To is a delightfully mind-bending way to better understand the science and technology underlying the things we do every day. The event will last for one hour, followed by the opportunity to have books signed by Randall Munroe. Seating in the Church Hill Theatre is unreserved and allocated on a first come, first served basis. For further information, or if you would like a signed copy because you can't make it to the event, please contact our events team on or 0131 622 8237. Accessibility Access to the building is via two ramps which lead to double glass front doors, which are accessible by push pad. The Auditorium is on the first floor and accessed by either stairs or lift. The lift is large and spacious and does have a grab rail and alarm button. The lift also features spoken messages indicating which floor the lift is on and whether the doors are opening or closing. Within the building there are call buttons for assistance if required. Accessible toilets are on both the ground and first floor. They both have grab rails, cord alarms and lowered sinks. For further specific access information, please contact the Church Hill Theatre on 0131 447 7597.
